Your adventure begins with a convenient pick-up from your hotel or riad in Fes. The drive south features scenic stops, starting with the charming, Swiss-style town of Ifrane. Next, you will wander through the tranquil cedar forests near Azrou, where you can spot wild Barbary monkeys in their natural habitat, before continuing through the picturesque palm groves of the Ziz Valley.
Arriving at the edge of the Merzouga desert in the afternoon, you will trade your 4×4 for a camel ride across the mesmerizing dunes, pausing atop a high ridge to watch a breathtaking sunset. Upon reaching your luxury desert camp, you will be welcomed with a warm cup of mint tea. Enjoy a delectable private dinner before gathering around the campfire to listen to traditional Berber drum beats under a vast, star-filled sky.
DAY 2: FULL DAY MERZOUGA DESERT DISCOVERY
Early risers will be rewarded with a spectacular desert sunrise. Following a delicious breakfast, you will embark on a full-day off-road 4×4 expedition to discover the hidden gems of the Erg Chebbi region.
The first stop is Khamlia, a vibrant village famous for its deep-rooted Gnawa music traditions. From there, you will venture off-road to the abandoned village of M’Fis to see its historic Galena mines (once used to produce cosmetic kohl). Next, you will visit a nomadic family living in traditional tents near the dunes to experience genuine Berber hospitality and gain insight into their daily lives. After a satisfying lunch, you will head to a beautiful riad overlooking the golden sands. Spend the afternoon unwinding or taking a refreshing swim, and cap off the day with a leisurely sunset stroll into the dunes. (Note: You also have the option to spend this second night back at the luxury camp if requested during booking).
DAY 3: MERZOUGA DESERT → RISSANI → TODRA GORGE → DADES VALLEY
After a tasty breakfast, you will begin your westbound journey toward the Dades Valley. If you are traveling on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday, the first stop is the vibrant traditional souk of Rissani, where you can explore local crafts, spices, and authentic street food.
The route then winds through the lush Tinghir Oasis before arriving at the dramatic Todra Canyon and Gorge. Here, you will have time to take a leisurely walk directly beneath the towering red cliffs carved by the Todra River. Later in the afternoon, the drive continues to the Dades Valley, where you will check into your hotel for a relaxing dinner and an overnight stay.
DAY 4: DADES VALLEY → BOU THARAR → KELAAT M’GOUNA → SKOURA → OUARZAZATE
Start your morning with breakfast and an optional guided hike through the captivating “Monkey Fingers” rock formations in the Dades Valley. Leaving the valley behind, you will take an adventurous off-road route toward Kelaat M’Gouna. Along the way, you will visit a Nomadic Berber family residing in a mountain cave near Bou Tharar to share a warm cup of tea.
The journey continues through Kelaat M’Gouna, famous for its Rose Valley (which bursts into bloom in the spring), and into Skoura—a massive, breathtaking oasis of palm groves that once served as a vital caravan stop. Here, you will explore the 300-year-old Amridil Kasbah before transferring to your hotel in Ouarzazate, the “Gateway to the Desert,” for dinner and a restful night.
DAY 5: OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → TELOUET KASBAH → MARRAKECH
After breakfast, you will explore the cinematic highlights of Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa,” with visits to the Taourirt Kasbah and the exterior of the famous Atlas Studios. A short drive away lies the magnificent UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient fortified village that has served as the backdrop for blockbuster hits like Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
Following lunch and your exploration of the Kasbah, the route ascends into the High Atlas Mountains. You will enjoy stops at sweeping panoramic viewpoints and pay a visit to the historic Telouet Kasbah (Palace of Glaoui), once a formidable stronghold of the El Glaoui family. Finally, you will descend the mountains via the breathtaking Tizi n’Tichka pass, arriving in Marrakech in the late afternoon. You will be comfortably dropped off at your accommodation or the airport. End of the tour.
