Tour ITINERARY
DAY 1: MARRAKECH → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → SKOURA → DADES GORGES
Your 4-day desert expedition begins with a convenient morning pick-up from your accommodation in Marrakech. We immediately set off toward the magnificent High Atlas Mountains, safely navigating the twisting roads of the famous Tizi-N-Tichka Pass. Your driver will make plenty of stops at the most scenic vantage points so you can capture photographs of the rugged peaks and charming traditional mountain villages.
After stopping for a delicious lunch in either Ouarzazate or near Ait Ben Haddou, the journey continues toward the Dades Gorges. Along the way, we will pass through the expansive palm oasis of Skoura—where you have the option to visit the grand 17th-century Amridil Kasbah—and the beautiful Rose Valley, which blossoms vibrantly if you are traveling in the spring. Upon arriving at the Dades Gorges, you will be amazed by the spectacular geological formations known locally as “monkey fingers” and enjoy panoramic views of the canyon. Dinner and a relaxing overnight stay at your comfortable hotel in the Dades Valley.
DAY 2: DADES GORGES → TODRA CANYON → MERZOUGA DESERT
Following a hearty breakfast, we take a highly scenic drive alongside the Dades and Todra Rivers, passing countless Berber villages and lush date palm groves. We soon arrive at the Todra Gorge in Tinghir, a massive fault dividing the High Atlas Mountains with sheer red rock walls that are globally renowned among climbers. After a peaceful walk through the base of the canyon, the journey continues deeper into the south toward the Merzouga desert.
Before reaching the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, we can stop at a traditional Berber cooperative where you can discover local culture, try on traditional garments for fun photos, and optionally pick up a desert scarf. Upon arrival in Merzouga, you will leave the vehicle behind and mount your camel for a trek into the vast Sahara. You will pause to try your hand at sandboarding and watch a vibrant sunset over the sweeping dunes. The evening concludes at your luxury desert camp with a delicious dinner, traditional drumming around the campfire, and a peaceful night sleeping under the Sahara’s unpolluted, starry sky.
DAY 3: MERZOUGA → RISSANI → AGDEZ → OUARZAZATE
We strongly suggest waking up early to witness the breathtaking spectacle of the Sahara sunrise from the top of a nearby dune. After a delightful breakfast at the camp, you can choose to travel back to the edge of the desert via a peaceful camel ride or a quick, comfortable 4×4 transfer to reunite with your driver.
Our first stop of the day is the nearby village of Khamliya, where you will be treated to a mesmerizing performance of traditional Gnawa music by locals whose roots trace back to Sub-Saharan Africa. We then drive to Rissani, the historic birthplace of Morocco’s current ruling dynasty and a pivotal trading post for ancient desert caravans. If visiting on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday, we will take the time to explore its bustling traditional souk.
Continuing the journey, we follow the path of the winding Draa Valley through Agdez, admiring an endless ribbon of green palm trees stretching through the arid landscape. We arrive in the city of Ouarzazate in the late afternoon, where you will check into your accommodation for dinner and a restful overnight stay.
DAY 4: OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH → TELOUET KASBAH → MARRAKECH
After breakfast, the day begins with an exploration of Ouarzazate, widely celebrated as the “Hollywood of Africa.” We will take time to see the historic Taourirt Kasbah and optionally visit the massive Atlas Studios, where countless cinematic epics have been filmed over the decades.
We then head to the architectural crown jewel of the region: the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. Protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, this sprawling mud-brick fortress is deeply steeped in history and has served as a legendary filming location for hits like Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.
After exploring the winding alleys of the Kasbah, we begin our return journey to Marrakech. The route takes us back through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains, with a special stop to discover the hidden beauty of the Telouet Kasbah, a former opulent stronghold of the Glaoui family. As we descend the mountains in the late afternoon, you will be dropped off at your accommodation in Marrakech, bringing your unforgettable 4-day desert adventure to a close.
