HIGHLIGHTS
Tour ITINERARY
DAY 1: MARRAKECH → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → AIT BEN HADDOU → DADES VALLEY
Your journey begins with a morning pick-up from your Marrakech accommodation. Leaving the bustling city behind, we ascend into the awe-inspiring High Atlas Mountains, navigating the spectacular winding roads of the Tizi-N-Tichka pass. Along the way, we will pause frequently so you can photograph the breathtaking mountain vistas and traditional Berber villages clinging to the hillsides.
After stopping for a delicious lunch near the famous Ait Ben Haddou or Ouarzazate, the expedition continues into the “Route of a Thousand Kasbahs.” We will drive through the lush oasis of Skoura—where you can choose to visit the impressive 17th-century Amridil Kasbah—and the vibrant Rose Valley, famous for its springtime bloom of thousands of pink roses. Finally, we arrive at the Dades Gorge. Here, you will be captivated by the incredible rock formations known locally as “monkey fingers” before settling into your charming hotel in the Dades Valley for dinner and a relaxing overnight stay.
DAY 2: DADES VALLEY → TODRA GORGE → MERZOUGA DESERT
After a delightful breakfast at your hotel, we set off toward the Sahara. Our first major stop is Tinghir, a stunning oasis town that once housed harmonious Berber and Jewish communities side by side. From here, we enter the magnificent Todra Gorge, where you will have the opportunity to walk alongside the crystal-clear river, dwarfed by 300-meter-high sheer red cliffs that are a favorite among rock climbers.
Following a satisfying lunch en route, we continue south until the towering, golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. Upon arriving in Merzouga, you will leave the vehicle behind and mount a camel for a trek into the desert. Guided by an experienced cameleer, you will pause atop a high dune to take in a mesmerizing sunset and try your hand at sandboarding. You will then arrive at your luxury desert camp. As night falls, enjoy a traditional dinner and an evening of rhythmic Berber drumming around a campfire, all under a brilliant canopy of desert stars.
DAY 3: IMMERSIVE EXPLORATION OF THE MERZOUGA DESERT
Waking up early today is highly recommended to catch a quiet, spectacular Sahara sunrise painting the dunes. After a hearty breakfast at the camp, a 4×4 vehicle will pick you up to begin a full day of deep desert exploration.
We start by driving off-road to visit a local nomadic family. They will welcome you into their hand-woven tent for a glass of mint tea, providing a fascinating glimpse into their enduring way of life in this harsh environment. Next, we will explore an abandoned village in the middle of nowhere that is home to historic galena mines. We then travel to the village of Khamlia, where you will be treated to the rhythmic, soul-stirring sounds of Gnawa music, performed by locals whose ancestors migrated from Sub-Saharan countries like Sudan. After a relaxed lunch at a local restaurant, we will visit Merzouga’s seasonal lake—often called the “flamingo lake” for the migratory birds it attracts when full—before dropping you off at a beautiful desert riad for dinner and your second night in the region.
DAY 4: MERZOUGA → RISSANI → DRAA VALLEY → AGDEZ → OUARZAZATE
Another early morning rewards you with a peaceful sunrise from the terrace of your riad. After breakfast, we bid farewell to the dunes and travel to the old city of Rissani. Once a major hub for desert caravans, it boasts a vibrant and authentic traditional souk which we will explore.
From Rissani, the route heads west toward Ouarzazate, tracing the path of the fascinating Draa Valley—Morocco’s longest river. The landscape here is characterized by millions of date palms and crumbling ancient kasbahs. We will make a scenic stop in the town of Agdez to admire the sweeping panoramic views of the valley. By the late afternoon, we will arrive in Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Hollywood of Africa,” where you will check into your riad for dinner and a comfortable overnight stay.
DAY 5: OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH → TELOUET KASBAH → MARRAKECH
Our final morning begins with breakfast in your Ouarzazate riad. We will spend time exploring this cinematic city, which is home to the historic Taourirt Kasbah and the famous Atlas Studios, where massive movie sets are preserved.
The journey then takes us to the legendary Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, this breathtaking fortified mud-brick village has served as a backdrop for legendary films like Gladiator and The Mummy, as well as the series Game of Thrones. After thoroughly exploring its ancient alleys, we begin our return journey through the High Atlas Mountains. Along the way, we will take a detour to admire the fascinating, partially ruined Telouet Kasbah, once the lavish seat of the El Glaoui family. Safely navigating the Tizi-N-Tichka pass one last time, we will arrive back in Marrakech in the late afternoon, concluding with a drop-off at your accommodation. End of the tour.
