HIGHLIGHTS
Tour ITINERARY
DAY 1: MARRAKECH → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH → DADES GORGE
Your 4-day journey begins with a morning departure from your accommodation in Marrakech. You will travel south, winding through the spectacular passes of the High Atlas Mountains. Along the way, we will stop at various panoramic viewpoints to admire the rugged scenery and traditional Berber villages that dot the mountainsides.
The first major highlight is the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. This incredibly preserved mud-brick fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that provides a fascinating window into ancient southern Moroccan culture. After exploring the Kasbah, the route continues through Ouarzazate—often referred to as the “Hollywood of Africa” and the gateway to the Sahara. The day concludes as you drive into the beautiful Dades Valley, where you will enjoy dinner and spend the night at a highly-rated local hotel or riad.
DAY 2: DADES GORGE → TODRA GORGE → ERFOUD → MERZOUGA DESERT
After breakfast, we depart the Dades Valley and head toward Tinghir to visit the magnificent Todra Gorge. Here, you can take a peaceful walk beneath the towering, vertical rock walls of this dramatic canyon, a favorite spot for climbers and nature lovers alike.
Continuing the journey, we pass through the fossil-rich town of Erfoud before finally arriving at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga. You will trade your vehicle for a camel caravan, trekking deep into the golden sand as the sun begins to set. Upon reaching your luxury desert camp, you will be welcomed with traditional hospitality. After a delicious dinner, you can enjoy Berber drumming around the campfire and sleep beneath a brilliant canopy of stars.
DAY 3: FULL DAY EXPLORING THE MERZOUGA DESERT
Following breakfast, today is entirely dedicated to uncovering the rich culture and diverse landscapes of the Merzouga region via a 4×4 off-road adventure. We begin by visiting a nomadic Berber family, where you will share a glass of tea in their traditional tent and learn about their unique way of life in this harsh environment.
Next, we venture off-road to the hidden village of M’Fis to explore its abandoned galena mines, where minerals were once extracted to make natural mascara (kohl). The tour then takes you to the small village of Khamlia to experience a live performance of Gnawa music, a rhythmic tradition brought to the region by locals whose ancestors migrated from southern Africa. If the seasonal waters are full, we will also visit the nearby “Lake of Birds” to look for migrating flocks. In the late afternoon, you will head to your comfortable hotel or riad in Merzouga for dinner and your final overnight stay in the desert.
DAY 4: MERZOUGA → ZIZ VALLEY → IFRANE → FES
We highly recommend waking up early to witness a glorious Sahara sunrise. After a tasty breakfast at your accommodation, we begin the northbound journey toward the imperial city of Fes. The first major stop is a stunning panoramic viewpoint overlooking the vast Ziz Valley, a massive oasis filled with thousands of date palm trees.
We will pause for lunch in Midelt or another town along the route before ascending into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Here, we will stop in the dense, fragrant cedar forests near Azrou to observe the native Barbary apes in their natural habitat. After a quick break in the charming, alpine-style town of Ifrane, we will complete the final leg of the drive. Your 4-day desert tour concludes in the evening with a drop-off at your riad or hotel in Fes. End of the tour.
